There will be fireworks in Nassau County again this week, but this time they won't be celebrating a holiday. The red-hot redistricting controversy returns to the legislature and the courts as Republicans try to get approval for their hastily redrawn maps of the 19 legislative districts, which at one point included part of Suffolk County, before November elections.

On Monday, a State Supreme Court judge is scheduled to hear arguments from the Democrats that the GOP redistricting violates state election law, since the maps weren't completed and filed with the board of elections eight months before the vote. At the same time, the Republican majority on the legislature, which contends that its maps were finalized on time, will push for a vote to amend those maps to fix "technical" problems.
