Up on the Board: Affordable homes fight, curbside gardens, and immigration reform

Editorial board member Jerry McKinstry is attending a meeting this morning with U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Deputy Secretary Maurice A. Jones. Jones is in Westchester to talk about the county’s obligations under the Fair and Affordable Housing Settlement. Integrating upscale neighborhoods with affordable homes is the issue, and Westchester appears to be a national test case for HUD. McKinstry is planning to write a column after the meeting.
We’re fascinated by New York City’s move to install 5,500 curbside gardens to intercept, absorb and filter storm runoff. The measure could keep the city’s waterways cleaner.
And we spent a second day discussing Nassau DA Kathleen Rice’s targeting of prostitution clients, again thinking that she could be spending her efforts on more important problems.
This afternoon, the board is meeting with Loretta Lynch, the U.S. Attorney from the Eastern District of New York.
The immigration debate is starting in the Senate on Monday, and we’re discussing whether we should weigh in this Sunday. Also under consideration is putting together our preferred agenda for the final weeks of the legislative session in Albany.
