Up on the Board: Hofstra student dead amid questions, anti-gay attacks in NYC
With the tragic death of Hofstra student Andrea Rebello on Friday, the editorial board is raising questions about how this happened. Did the Nassau County police officer who responded follow procedure? We realize these are difficult decisions in the heat of the moment. But why did he enter the house alone instead of waiting for backup? And, is an investigation by Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice the right avenue for getting to the truth of the events?
No matter the answers to these questions, we are pained by the death of this young woman.
Also, what’s going on with the attacks on gay people in Manhattan? Mark Carson was shot and killed over the weekend in the shadow of the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, a landmark for the gay rights movement. It was at least the fourth violent attack in two weeks believed to have been motivated by anti-gay bias. If New York City isn’t a home for tolerance, then where?
