Michaud: Welcoming dialogue about teacher evaluations

The letters page today published some pretty harsh words about Newsday. Four Long Island school superintendents took issue with a Monday editorial that said school officials are whining when they complain about the cost of a new teacher evaluation system. The editorial came on the heels of a news story that ran last week.

When the Editorial Board publishes criticism of itself -- and devotes an entire page to the response -- we are trying to send a message. That is, we welcome the debate.

A healthy, respectful dialogue about the issues we face on Long Island is how we on the Opinion staff view our mission.

We welcome solid arguments such as these superintendents made. And we hope to roll out better platforms for debate in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.
