Today marks the final day apartment hunters can apply to be considered for one of five new rental units through a Bay Shore housing lottery, offering below-market prices.
The lottery will close at 5 p.m. for the apartments, known as Chelsea Commons, according to the program guidelines.
The three-story building at 227 Fourth Ave. has 22 apartments total, and is just north of Main Street near the Bay Shore stop on the Long Island Rail Road. The other 17 units will be priced at market-rate.
The lottery offers two one-bedroom units priced at $2,446 per month and three studio apartments for $2,160 per month.
As of March 9, more than 400 households have applied to live at the Bay Shore building, said Jill Rosen-Nikoloff, senior vice president and general counsel of the Long Island Housing Partnership, which administers the lottery.
“All of Suffolk County needs additional affordable housing, particularly for people at lower income levels,” Rosen-Nikoloff previously told Newsday. “We have waitlists of people who need housing.”
Two firms, 227 4th Avenue Partners LLC and 227 4th Ave. Bay Shore LLC, developed the residential building. The duo spent roughly $6 million to build the apartment complex, Sam Glass, the managing member of Bellerose-based 227 4th Ave. Bay Shore LLC, previously told Newsday.
The building's market-rate apartments will rent for between $2,400 to $2,900 per month, Glass previously told Newsday.
Households earning up to 80% of the area median income will meet the income requirements for the five lottery units.
For example, a single person renting a studio could earn between $69,270 and $92,350, and a couple renting a one-bedroom could earn between $79,170 and $92,350, according to the program guidelines.
