Old Field home near Flax Pond beach lists for $2.5 million
From wood harvested on his own property, the owner of a 2-acre parcel in the village of Old Field crafted custom cabinetry, stairs and railings. A woodworker, he was familiar with the material.
Renovated over the course of eight years, the six-bedroom, three-bathroom house in East Setauket is on the market for nearly $2.5 million. Annual taxes on the property, which falls within the Three Village school district, total $33,187.
"It was a full-time project for him to recreate the house based on an Arts and Crafts-style house out on the West Coast," said listing agent Michael O'Dwyer, who has co-listed the property with Holly Brainard for Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty. "Every piece of woodwork that you touch in the house feels like butter, it's just so beautifully prepared and finished."
Designated spaces inside the 5,137-square-foot house include a great room, media room, chef's kitchen and attached two-car garage. Cooled by central air conditioning, the home is warmed by oil, baseboard and heat pump. Outside, there are a porch swing, a private backyard and a detached two-car garage.
Though there are bedrooms on each of the home's two floors, the design reflects a style known as "reverse living," Brainard said. The primary living spaces — kitchen, dining room, living room, wrap-around porch — are on the second floor.
"He fashioned the home after Greene and Greene, which are architects widely known in California," Brainard said. "A lot of their architectural designs were that reverse living."
Within walking distance of the property, there is the private Flax Pond Association Beach. Annual dues total $400, according to Brainard.
Situated amid large walnut trees, the house is surrounded by woods, and has a water view in winter.
"It's a perfect place for someone who's into nature," O'Dwyer said.
