A fully renovated historic home in Roslyn is on the market for $1.298 million. The annual property taxes are $15,357.

Built in 1836, the house sits on a 0.34-acre lot on Main Street. It was owned by Captain James W. Smith, who was a commanding officer of the Hempstead Harbor Militia and a tailor in the village, according to the Roslyn Landmark Society.

A renovation was completed in 2021, and included a new kitchen with appliances, plumbing, electrical panel and roof.

The house was also repainted inside and out last year, said listing agent Ronit Berman, of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty. But many of its original features still remain. A storage cabinet, built in the home in the 1830s, still resides in the dining room.

"It still has all of the original hardwood floors," Berman said. "When you walk through the house, it still has the doors with the knobs from 1836. You have the old charm, but with modern living."

The sellers also found innovative ways to bring their home into the 21st century — there was a small staircase going from an upstairs bedroom to the kitchen, which they closed off and turned into a laundry chute, Berman said.

The house contains three stories, three bedrooms and 1½ bathrooms. There is a two-story barn on site with a one-car garage. The barn was used by the seller as a gym and media center, Berman said.

Notable features include four wood-burning fireplaces, a four-car driveway, and an ensuite primary bedroom with a freestanding whirlpool tub.

Outside, the backyard has two seating areas to choose from, one with a picnic vibe for eating and entertaining.

"The backyard is very deceiving from the front because you’re still on Main Street, but it’s a fabulous, entertaining backyard," Berman said. "It really feels like you’re upstate in the woods."

The property is served by the Roslyn Union Free School District.
