On a webpage with a parchment-colored background, artifacts and ceramic fragments found on the grounds of an 1800s Colonial in Miller Place are carefully cataloged. The home’s current owner has curated a website that documents the house and its history based on her research.

Known as the Thomas Helme House, the four-bedroom, two-bath building is on the market for the first time in two decades. Priced at $1.2 million, the 3,000-square-foot home is listed by Holly Brainard and Michael O’Dwyer through Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty. Annual taxes on the 3-acre property, which includes a pond, total $8,500.

"It is meticulously restored," Brainard said. "All of the original mantels are in the home."

Gumbrecht hand-stripped and hand restored every piece of molding in the house down to the original wood, Brainard said. Today, its modern and original features coexist. Warmed by oil and forced air and cooled by central air conditioning, the home retains a beehive oven.

"She owned the house for about 20 years and it was like 20 years of hard labor," O’Dwyer added. "She was a dedicated homeowner and beautifully restored this house. I’ve been in a lot of historic homes on Long Island, this is one of the best restorations I’ve seen."

There are seven fireplaces throughout the house; each has been relined and repointed. Intricate woodwork and wide-plank floors are among original features. The windows have been hand-restored, as well, according to the agents. The current owner is just the third in the home’s history, Brainard said.

Among the home’s amenities are a freestanding, copper bathtub, a full, unfinished basement and a detached two-car garage. There is a summer kitchen in addition to the original kitchen. There is also a shed on the property.

The North Country Road residence is in the Miller Place Historic District and falls within the Miller Place Union Free School District.
