Navigating the new digital paper
Welcome to Newsday's new digital paper!
All the features you are used to are still here, but we've introduced new ways to read, hear and watch the stories of the day.
The new paper does have a few new buttons and functions you may need to get used to, though, and a couple of things do work a little differently. So, here's a quick guide to navigating the new paper.
First, here's some help getting pages and articles in Newsday's new digital paper to display at exactly the size you want.
The key is a new set of zoom controls for making the pages you see larger or smaller.
You can choose the Zoom setting you like here for the pages and save it. Or you can just double-click on the page and get the maximum zoom level.
Another tip: Use the full-screen button.
You can also try switching between the fit width and fit depth settings. The same buttons can switch you back and forth.
What you want to avoid is trying to resize pages or the text within story windows by adjusting your screen magnification settings. All that will do is change the size of the ad at the bottom and the blue bar at the top. To devote the most space to the paper, keep those settings at no more than 100% (for most browsers, you change screen magnification by holding down the Control key and tapping on the plus or minus keys). Instead, use the new zoom controls.
Once you have the page at the size you like, the arrow keys on your keyboard can help you move around. Your mouse will do the same -- just hold down the left mouse key and drag the image wherever you'd like.
Of course, we recommend clicking on the story and opening a stand-alone view of the article we call the story window.
There, too, you can set the type size you want.
We hope you get comfortable with the new ways to adjust your view of the paper and begin to explore our newest features.
- You can browse sections of today’s paper, page by page or story by story. Just click on PAGES or ARTICLES at the bottom left corner of your screen or in the menu.
- Explore our extensive archive of magazines, special sections and classic editions from the Newsday Vault. The new design makes it easier to browse. Just click the Archive icon in the blue bar or in the menu.
- Listen to articles, create an audio playlist or hear the entire edition read to you while you drive, commute, exercise, walk the dog or work around the house. You can play an individual story from the story window icon, just as you can on the app or web, but you also can click on the headphones icon and create a playlist.
