Amed Rosario getting closer to a return from finger injury

Rookie shortstop Amed Rosario may soon be returning from a finger injury that has lingered for nearly a week.

Before Friday’s game against the Reds, Rosario participated in limited baseball activity for the first time since leaving a game on Saturday with swelling in his right index finger. He was scheduled to throw while also doing some limited work in the indoor batting cage.

“We’re not worried about any serious injury except the fact that this thing was so swelled up he couldn’t swing,” Mets manager Terry Collins said. “There’s no reason to at this particular moment rush him back in the lineup and cause an issue where he’s going to miss two weeks.”

Rosario, 21, is hitting .245 with four homers and eight RBIs through his first 31 games in the big leagues. According to Collins, Rosario missed five games with a similar issue in the minors this season with Triple-A Las Vegas.

“At this stage of the game, we’re just being cautious,” Collins said.

What’s next for Noah?

Now that the minor-league regular season is finished, the next step in Noah Syndergaard’s rehab will come in a simulated game, the Mets announced. The righthander will throw 50 pitches in a simulated game though a date has yet to be determined. He has pitched twice in minor-league rehab assignments and is expected to return before season’s end. He’s been out since April with a partially torn lat muscle.

Extra bases

Asdrubal Cabrera could be back in the lineup as soon as Saturday. He was pulled from Thursday’s game with what Collins called a muscle spasm in his upper glute area. An MRI on Friday revealed no damage to his back as had been initially feared . . . T.J. Rivera is scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery next week . . . Infielder Phillip Evans was promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas.
