Backman, Brooklyn eliminated in playoffs
Wally Backman ended his first--and perhaps last--season as manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones on a losing note as his team was defeated by the Tri-City ValleyCats for the championship of the New York-Penn League.
Brooklyn, which had the league's best record during the regular season at 51-24, lost two straight in the best-of-three series.
Backman, considered a candidate to replace Jerry Manuel, did not address that issue other than to say he he didn't even know if he'd be asked back to manage Brooklyn.
