Beat up Travis d'Arnaud will skip Thursday's doubleheader

Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud will sit out Thursday's doubleheader against the Nationals with an injury suffered on Tuesday.
Neither d'Arnaud nor manager Terry Collins would reveal the exact nature of the issue. The catcher volunteered only that he was "banged up," though he insisted that he will play again before the season ends on Sunday against the Astros.
"It's just September," d'Arnaud said. "Everybody's got their little things. I'm going to get it checked out and make sure everything's good."
Collins said d'Arnaud was "beat up a little bit," though he took a page from his coaching counterparts in ice hockey and refused to divulge more details.
It's the second time this month that d'Arnaud has been sidelined because of nagging injuries. But the Mets want d'Arnaud, 25, to get through his first full season as a major leaguer.
"You've just got to do it," said d'Arnaud, who is hitting .242 with 13 homers. "It's part of the game. Everybody has to go through September and this is my first experience with it through a full season. It's a grind that's for sure. I've just got to keep my head up, keep fighting, and finish strong."

Rain wiped away Wednesday night's scheduled game against the Nationals, which will be made up with a split doubleheader Thursday. Righthander Dillon Gee, Wednesday night's scheduled starter, will start the matinee. Zack Wheeler will start the nightcap. The Nationals are trying to clinch home-field advantage . . . Closer Jenrry Mejia said he will undergo surgery to repair his sports hernia on Oct. 2. Mejia, 24, has a 3.77 ERA and 27 saves despite pitching much of the second half with the condition.
