The Mets had to cope with the absence of Tim Byrdak, who was excused to attend a funeral in Chicago. Byrdak was the bullpen hero of Tuesday’s 4-3 victory after striking out both Brian McCann and Diory Hernandez with two runners on in the seventh inning.

Terry Collins begrudgingly admitted Byrdak’s absence, lamenting the fact that the Braves would know about their lefthanded void in the pen.

“Tim Byrdak’s jersey will be in the bullpen tonight,” Collins said. “Whether he’s out there, I can’t answer that. Somebody lefthanded will be warming up. Whether they are lefthanded or not, I’m not really sure. Could be the security guard.”
