New Mets manager Terry Collins spoke with reporters -- including our Mark Herrmann --today at Citi Field and made the following pronouncements:

Mike Pelfrey will be his opening day starter. No surprise there.

Jose Reyes will bat  leadoff. Yhere will be no Jerry Manuel-like experimenting with the shortstop. Also, Collins said it is too early to talk about a contract extension for Reyes.

Carlos Beltran will start spring training in centerfield. Collins said Beltran deserves the chance to show what he can do.

That addressed speculation that the Mets would put Angel Pagan in center and move Beltran to rightfield. But it left open the possibility of it happening if Beltran does not perform as expected.
