PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Mets rightfielder Curtis Granderson missed Monday’s workout with an eye problem, manager Terry Collins said.
“He had something in his eye,” Collins said. “He said he had something in it yesterday, and he came today and it was pretty red.”
Granderson arrived at camp wearing eyeglasses, which is not usual. He appeared ready to go through workouts as usual, but before the team took the field, he departed the complex to visit a doctor.
The Mets still are awaiting an official diagnosis. Collins said Granderson was held out because of the possibility that he has pink eye, a highly contagious condition.
Either way, Collins said the Mets believe the problem to be minor.
Granderson, 34, was one of the Mets’ most durable players a year ago. He hit .259 with 26 homers and 70 RBIs in 157 games.
Tejada’s future
The Mets might part ways with Ruben Tejada before Opening Day, either by releasing him or exploring a trade.
Team officials have yet to make any decisions regarding Tejada, whose role entering the season is diminished from a season ago. But if he were to be released at least 15 days before Opening Day, the club would be on the hook for only a small portion of the $3-million deal he signed to avoid arbitration.
The Mets intend to start Asdrubal Cabrera at shortstop and Wilmer Flores is being groomed as the primary utilityman, leaving Tejada without a clear role.
Extra bases
Outfielder Roger Bernadina has yet to report to camp because of a visa issue that might drag into next week . . . The Mets will play their only intrasquad game of spring training Tuesday, a welcome break from the monotony of camp. Said Collins: “Pitcher’s BP, I’ve seen enough.”
