PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - David Wright, a late scratch from Saturday's intrasquad game, is now out indefinitely due to discomfort in his upper left rib-cage.

At the moment, the plan is for Wright to sit out at least the first two Grapefruit League games, which are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. But Sandy Alderson said Wright would not play again until he is "asymptomatic," and that extra precaution was related to seeing Scott Hairston aggravate last season's oblique injury on Saturday.

"I think if this was Opening Day, I'd be playing -- 100 percent," Wright said. "But I think in light of Scotty, I think it opened up my eyes. You hate to see a guy go down, but it would be a lot worse if two guys go down. I think I can play, but it was taken out of my hands. Terry [Collins] made it very simple for me. He told me I was not playing tomorrow and Tuesday and we'll go from there."

Collins pulled Wright aside as soon as the third baseman walked into the clubhouse Sunday morning. With Hairston scheduled to get an injection for his oblique injury Monday, and Ike Davis playing amidst a "likely" diagnosis of Valley Fever, the manager clearly didn't want to roll the dice with Wright.

"I think it's kind of the perfect storm as far as what happened to Scotty and, in general, I think it's the correct decision, no question," Wright said. "I think that sometimes I can be hardheaded and stubborn. The medical staff, they might take it slow - probably too slow for my liking - but at the end it's usually pretty good for you."

"I've tried to battle them as much as I could these last couple days. But they made it very clear, and Terry made it very clear, that they're gong to be the ones running the show."
