David Wright ties Ed Kranepool for Mets hits record

David Wright tied Ed Kranepool's all-time Mets hits record Tuesday night at Citi Field with a two-run single to right in the seventh inning of a 10-6 loss to the Pirates.

Wright, who has 1,418 hits, also smacked his 20th home run in the first inning, a solo shot to center. The tying hit was a dunker into right off Jared Hughes that was trapped by rightfielder Garrett Jones.

Wright went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and is batting .306 with 20 homers and 88 RBIs.

Wright admitted before the game that achieving the all-time franchise hits record will be "bittersweet" because of the Mets' poor second half.

"It'd be nice to be in a position where you're able to accomplish something like this in the middle of a pennant race," he said. "I'm proud I've been able to accomplish what I've accomplished thus far, but there's obviously still a huge hole as far as what I want to accomplish as a team."

Wright, 29, is entering into a huge offseason. Assuming the Mets pick up his $16-million option, Wright will become a free agent after 2013. The sides have agreed to table any extension talk until this season is over.

Next week, it will be over.

Wright was asked if he knew what was going to happen once he puts the bats and glove away for the winter.

"That's a great question," he said. "I'm very proud of the fact I don't feel like it's been an issue with me all year. Not once have I stopped and been like, 'Oh, man, I wonder how this contract stuff's going to work itself out.'

"To answer: I have no idea. I'm new to this and I don't know what the timetable is. I'm sure at some point, once the offseason starts, I'll catch my breath and I'm assuming at some point the Mets will approach my agents and start talking."

General manager Sandy Alderson recently told season-ticket holders the Mets expect to reach agreements with Wright and R.A. Dickey, who will go for his 20th win Thursday afternoon.

Former Mets general manager Jim Duquette, who has seen Wright grow up from the 38th overall pick in the 2001 draft to the face of the franchise, said he also expects the Mets and Wright to find common ground on a new deal. "I don't think there's any reason not to think that won't get done -- as long as there's a willingness on both sides," said Duquette, a baseball analyst for MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM who filled in on the Mets' radio broadcast Tuesday night for Howie Rose.

"I'd be surprised knowing David from his side if he wouldn't want to stay here. I'll really think they'll get him signed."
