Davis' foot back in boot for 3 more weeks

All along, the injury suffered by Ike Davis seemed worse than the Mets' early prognosis. That pessimistic assessment was confirmed Tuesday when the team announced that Davis' left foot will be placed back in a boot for three weeks.
Davis was injured May 10 in Colorado when he collided with David Wright while going after a pop-up near the mound. His ankle was twisted in a gruesome way, but general manager Sandy Alderson said that sprain has healed.
What hasn't healed is the bone bruise Davis suffered. It has left him unable to run without pain. Now the Mets' doctors don't want him to run at all.
"We hoped to have him back on the 26th of May," Alderson said, referring to the first date Davis would have been eligible to come off the disabled list. "That didn't happen."
Davis, who was batting .302 with seven home runs and 25 RBIs, will be re-evaluated in three weeks. If all goes well, Alderson hopes to have him back before the All-Star break in mid-July.
But the Mets know that often, all does not go well with bone bruises. Carlos Beltran spent more than a year recovering from a bone bruise in his knee.
"It's more severe obviously than we first anticipated," manager Terry Collins said.
Daniel Murphy has been filling in at first for Davis. Tuesday, Collins shifted Murphy to third and started Nick Evans at first.
Extra bases
Wright (stress fracture in lower back) will be re-evaluated Thursday to determine if he can begin baseball activities. Wright has been on the DL since May 16 . . . Alderson said Jose Reyes is expected to rejoin the team Thursday, the first day he is eligible to be reinstated from bereavement leave. Reyes is in the Dominican Republic after the death of his grandmother . . . Johan Santana (shoulder surgery) will begin his next step, throwing batting practice, in "the very near future," Alderson said . . . Reyes was third among shortstops in early voting for the NL All-Star team. Wright was fourth at third base and Beltran eighth among outfielders.
