Duaner Sanchez, the former setup man whose big-league career never recovered from injuries he suffered in the most notorious cab ride in Mets history, has signed on to pitch for the Long Island Ducks this season.
Sanchez was an important pitcher in the Mets' bullpen during those playoff years, but in the early-morning hours of the day of the trade deadline in 2006, he decided to hop in a cab in Miami in search of a late-night snack. The taxi wound up in an accident and Sanchez suffered a separated shoulder. The Mets pulled off a trade later that day that brought them Roberto Hernandez and . . . Oliver Perez.
Sanchez attempted to return but suffered further injuries and was released by the Mets during 2009 spring training. He pitched briefly for the Padres later that year and spent last season splitting time with Mexico City of the Mexican League and Independent Sussex in the Can-Am Association.
The Ducks also signed outfielder Sean Smith.
