Third baseman Eduardo Escobar missed the Mets’ win against the Brewers on Thursday under mysterious circumstances, with general manager Billy Eppler and manager Buck Showalter citing a “non-workplace event” to explain his absence.
Showalter indicated there was some sort of medical issue, for which he repeatedly asked for updates from the Mets’ training staff during the game.
“That’s all I can really say legally,” Showalter said. “How’s that?”
Showalter also wasn’t sure if Escobar would be available Friday, when the Mets open a series against the Marlins.
“I don’t know yet,” he said. “I’ll let the people that handle the medical profession do their job and they’ll let us know.”
That left the Mets with less than two bench players for the night: Catcher Patrick Mazeika and outfielder Starling Marte, who was available to run (and indeed pinch ran and scored the winning run in the eighth) but not hit due to a bruised right forearm.
