Farm report: Mark Cohoon
Jon Niese's shutout against the Padres was a big deal last week. But for Mark Cohoon, a 22-year-old lefthander at Class A Savannah, it's more unusual when he doesn't throw one.
Cohoon matched a South Atlantic League record Wednesday with his third consecutive shutout, a four-hitter in the Sand Gnats' 12-0 victory over the Rome Braves.
Cohoon (7-1) has not allowed an earned run in four starts and has not given up more than two runs in any of his 13 starts this season.
He leads the SAL with a 1.30 ERA and is third with 75 strikeouts in 90 1/3 innings. Cohoon has limited opponents to a .213 average, and in an odd twist, that drops to .198 against righthanded hitters.
A 12th-round pick in the 2008 draft, he went 9-2 with a 2.15 ERA for Class A Brooklyn last season.
