Fernando Martinez gets another big-league shot

Fernando Martinez usually finds himself on the disabled list by this time each year. Instead, he's in Denver for Thursday’s game at Coors Field as the replacement for another injured player, Ike Davis.

Martinez awoke at 4 a.m. in Buffalo and then flew through Detroit to make it in time for the scheduled 3:10 p.m. start. After walking through the clubhouse door, the smiling Martinez shook hands with just about everyone and was no doubt thrilled to be back — and healthy.

“Right now, I feel great,” Martinez said. “I feel 100 percent. Hopefully there’s no more injuries.”

Assistant GM John Ricco said the Mets called up Martinez, and not a first-base fill-in, because of his performance at Triple-A Buffalo, where he was hitting .292 with three doubles, three homers and seven RBIs in 19 games. Ricco added that Lucas Duda, a better fit because he can play first, has been bothered by back issues.
