Golly Gee, but no no-hitter
You allowed yourself to think that Dillon Gee might throw a no-hitter against the Nationals last night. No Mets pitcher has thrown one, so if figured to be super historic that it would come from someone pitching in their first big league game.
Alas, Willie Harris homered leading off the sixth inning and it was all over.
Lennon Blog researchers were up all night to find out of anyone had pitched a no-hitter in their first major league game. Not just as a starter, their first game.
It turns out that only one name surfaced. Bumpus Jones of the Cincinnati Reds did it against Pittsburgh on October 15, 1892. The mound was 50 feet away from the batter at that time.
It was not the beginning of a great career as Jones pitched a total of eight games in the majors, going 2-4 with a 7.99 earned run average. His last game was a 10-walk performance against Cleveland and their starter, Cy Young. .
