In his first interview since a March 24 arrest for driving under the influence of a controlled substance, Dwight Gooden told 1050 ESPN's Michael Kay Thursday that the incident "brought back a lot of bad memories."

Gooden, 45, declined for legal reasons to discuss specifics of his arrest in Franklin Lakes, N.J., which came after a two-vehicle accident with his 5-year-old son in his car.

But he did address his situation in general terms, recalling his 2006 incarceration for violating parole by using cocaine.

"I had a lot of time to relive my life, the good and bad, and at that time I decided to make some changes for my life when I get out," said Gooden, who has a long history of drug use.

"I've done those things, so I can't let one bad judgment that I made that one day take away the last four years that I've been doing so great."
