As expected, the Mets placed Ryota Igarashi on the 15-day DL today after he strained his left hamstring last night.

It was not expected for Manny Acosta to be the player called up, but Bobby Parnell and Kiko Calero are off to slow starts in Triple-A and Sean Green is still injured, apparently. We were rooting for Tobi Stoner, but that's mostly because he has a funny name.

RECALL RHP MANNY ACOSTA FROM BUFFALO (AAA)

 

FLUSHING, N.Y., April 21, 2010 – The New York Mets today announced that righthanded pitcher Ryota Igarashi sustained a moderate injury to his left hamstring in last night’s game.  The injury was confirmed today by MRI at the Hospital for Special Surgery.  He was placed on the 15-Day Disabled List and will progress to baseball activities as tolerated. To complete the Mets’ 25-man roster, the team has recalled righthanded pitcher Manny Acosta from Buffalo (AAA) of the International League.  Acosta will wear uniform #36 and will be available for tonight’s game. 

Acosta, 28, was claimed off waivers from the Atlanta Braves on March 30th and appeared in five games with the Bisons to start the 2010 season.  He was 0-1 with a 2.16 ERA (two earned runs / 8.1 innings pitched) and allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out nine. 

The Colon , Panama native went 1-1 with a 4.34 ERA in 36 games for the Braves last season.  In 37.1 innings, he notched 32 strikeouts.  He also pitched in 18 games for Gwinnett (AAA) of the International League in 2009, going 1-3 with a 2.63 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 27.1 innings.

He was 3-5 with three saves and a 3.57 ERA in 46 games for Atlanta in 2008.  The previous year, Acosta went 1-1 with a 2.28 ERA in 21 games for the Braves.

For his career, the righthander is 5-7 with three saves and a 3.55 ERA in 103 major league games.  In 114.0 innings, he has allowed 106 hits, 50 runs, 45 earned and 59 walks while striking out 85.

Igarashi, the 11th Japanese-born player to appear in a game for the Mets, is 0-0 with a 1.35 ERA (one earned run / 6.2 innings) in seven games out of the bullpen.  He has allowed three hits and four walks while striking out three.
