MIAMI -- Ike Davis expressed cautious optimism after hitting his first homer since April 25.
Davis has spent nearly two weeks on the brink of a demotion, but in Sunday's 11-6 loss to Miami, he had a two-run homer and an RBI single. Davis, who has made recent swing adjustments, is hitting .292 with a double, a homer and seven RBIs in his last seven games.
"Really, I've hit the ball decent for the last four or five days, so it's good that one went over the fence," Davis said. "Obviously, I'm having better at-bats, putting the ball in play more and hitting the ball more solid."
Wheeler deals
Zack Wheeler could join the Mets as soon as after his next start, according to people with knowledge of the team's thinking. The Mets appear willing to delay his promotion until mid-month to prevent him from achieving Super 2 status and an extra year of salary arbitration.
According to a source, the Mets had discussed several dates for a potential debut, but those plans were scrapped after Wheeler was shelved for a few days upon being diagnosed with shoulder inflammation. He allowed three hits and a run in six innings, striking out six, in Las Vegas' 2-1 win Saturday night.
Playing the oddsTerry Collins defended his decision to have Scott Rice face Marcell Ozuna. Rice had walked three straight before allowing Ozuna's two-run double. Collins said Ozuna is hitting .160 against sinkerballs thrown by lefties, one of Rice's specialties. Said Collins: "I had no problem with having him pitch to Ozuna.''D'Arnaud update
Catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud (broken foot) is scheduled to be examined Monday. Barring a significant setback, he is expected to return to game action by the end of the month.
