WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The most remarkable part of righthander Jacob deGrom’s 20-pitch bullpen session Friday was that it was utterly unremarkable.

DeGrom “was letting it go,” he said, despite coming off a bout of lower-back stiffness.

“I felt good,” he said. “I threw every pitch. No problems with any of them. Definitely a step in the right direction.”

DeGrom said he will throw again Sunday, which manager Mickey Callaway said will come in a live batting practice setting. If all continues to go well, DeGrom could get into a Grapefruit League game a couple of days after that.

At this point, deGrom is unlikely to make five starts — Callaway’s preferred number for starters during spring training — and be rested for Opening Day. But he still is not expected to miss the start of the season.

“You can always throw a guy last in the rotation, get him a start down here [in a minor- league game] when we’re already gone,” Callaway said. “That would be his fifth start, if that happens.”

Cespedes, Lagares play ‘D’

Leftfielder Yoenis Cespedes (right shoulder soreness) and centerfielder Juan Lagares (left hamstring strain) made their defensive debuts Friday. Cespedes played four innings against the Astros in West Palm Beach and Lagares played three innings against the Nationals in Port St. Lucie.

“It felt very good,” said Lagares, who was tested in the first inning by a ball in the gap and a pop-up to shallow center.

Cespedes said he still is feeling some of his normal spring training soreness.

“It’s a process,” he said through a translator. “I felt pretty good, although the shoulder is not 100 percent. But I think in the next days, I will be ready.”

Lagares grounded out to third in his only at-bat. Cespedes went 1-for-3.

Extra bases

Righthander Anthony Swarzak (left calf strain) began a throwing program Friday . . . First baseman Dominic Smith (strained right quadriceps) has returned to baseball activity but has not run yet, he said.
