Jeff Wilpon makes visit to Atlanta
ATLANTA -- Mets Chief Operating Officer Jeff Wilpon flew into Atlanta Monday where he had a closed-door meeting in the manager's office at Turner Field that lasted 90 minutes.
Manager Jerry Manuel, GM Omar Minaya and assistant GM John Ricco were all present in the meeting.
"I didn't come here to fire anybody," Wilpon said.
When asked if he was satisfied with what's going on with the team, Wilpon said, "If I felt good about what was going on, I wouldn't be here right now."
Manuel said the meeting was "just baseball." He said he wasn't given an ultimatum or timetable to turn around the sinking Mets.
Part of the discussion involved a number of pitching moves for the upcoming week.
The Mets will use Hisanori Takahashi to start Friday against the Yankees. The club did not announce a starter for Wednesday, but R.A. Dickey already had a name plate on a locker in the clubhouse. There are strong indications that he will be called up from Triple A Buffalo to take the spot vacated by Oliver Perez.
