On Tuesday, the Mets’ farm system welcomed back Jeurys Familia, the 21-year-old righty who had been on the disabled list (shoulder impingement) since July 14.
He didn’t crack Baseball America’s top 100 prospect list before the start of this season. But with No. 44 Jenrry Mejia on the DL because of Tommy John surgery, Familia now probably deserves some consideration to join Zack Wheeler and Matt Harvey as the Mets’ top-rated young pitchers.
Familia struggled Tuesday, allowing four hits and four runs in 1 2/3 innings, but his ERA is 4.26 in 10 starts at Double-A Binghamton. He has 62 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings and he struck out 11 and 10 in back-to-back starts earlier this season.
