The fans' day-to-day worry over winning and losing was once put into perspective by Frank Howard, the gentle giant who replaced George Bamberger as manager of the Mets in 1983. Howard took the job 46 games into the season. Pointing to a 162-game schedule, Howard said, ``You are going to win 60 and lose 60. It's what you do in the other 40 that determines the season.'' Howard went 52-64 and was replaced by Davey Johnson the following season.
