Luis Hernandez felt the sharp pain when he fouled a ball off his foot Saturday. He just dind't want to give in. He definitely did not want to give up an at-bat, nor did he know his foot was broken. "When I was at home plate, I was like, don’t hit any slow ground ball because I knew there was going to be pain so bad," he said at Citi Field today, with his right foot in a cast.

That was no slow roller, it was a ground ball that he hit. "When I started runninng the bases, I knew it was broken," he said, adding that an examination tomorrow will determine if he needs surgery.

The most immediate concern was making it around the bases. He said he was a little afraid that something bad would happen. Once he rounded third, he just wanted to get home. "I didn't know how I was going to get to the dugout," he said, adding that he didn't care.

He did make it, completing a tour around the bases that took 34 seconds.

As a gritty home run trot, it was reminiscent of Kirk Gibson's for the Dodgers against the Athletics in the World Series, although obviously not a fraction as dramatic.

"I saw that a couple times. I thought about it later, that I looked just like that guy, running the bases. It was pretty fun. Without the pain, I could enjoy it," he said..
