Mark Sanchez, Tiger Woods, Gilbert Arenas & the Mets
What do Mark Sanchez's PR gaffes, Tiger Woods', um, indiscretions and Gilbert Arenas' handgun follies have to do with the Mets? Hopefully nothing, from the team's standpoint, which is why the the Mets will have media workshops this morning to discuss the do's and don'ts of dealing with the Fourth Estate.
All three, among many others, will be used as extreme examples of how things can get messy fast - and how the players can deal with their own situations. As we look to Day 2 of workouts here at Tradition Field, the Mets don't have any serious problems to deal with, other than Francisco Rodriguez's "pink eye," which I beleive was the only injury/ailment the team didn't suffer from last season.
Still, it was a little odd that Jerry Manuel said the medical staff didn't know what K-Rod had come down with when he first arrived. Any elementary school teacher can probably diagnose pink eye within minutes.
Yesterday was a good day for the Mets, with Jose Reyes running the bases, David Wright smacking the ball around in BP and Johan Santana looking sharp in his first bullpen session. Of course, there's a long way to go before Opening Day on April 5.
The Mets will have their first and only intrasquad game at Tradition Field on Monday around 12:30 p.m. And as I head outside, I feel like I can mention the weather at least one more time because it's still quite chilly here. Check it out. As of 7 a.m.
Port St. Lucie: 38 degrees
New York City: 26
Twelve degree difference? That's it? I'm skipping the Reefs today.
