Mejia: Prospect or suspect?
Jenrry Mejia (0-4, 4.91) makes his third big league start when the Mets face the Pirates and Pat Maholm (7-14, 5.37) tonight at Citi Field.
While no judgements can be absolute the last month of the season, everyone would like to see some improvement from this supposed top prospect.
Mejia hasn't shown much in his first two starts. He gave up four runs on eight hits and struck out only two in five innings against the Cubs. It got worse against the Phillies as Mejia was battered for six runs on nine hits in four innings. Again, he had just two strikeouts.
There are openings in the rotation next season, especially if Johan Santana is not available the first month or two.
The Mets have three starters in Mike Pelfrey, Jonathon Niese and, most likely, R.A. Dickey. That leaves two spots in the usual five-man rotation.
Even with an emphasis on youth, it doesn't seem the Mets would go with two rookie starters in Mejia and surprise candidate Dillon Gee. Figure the Mets to look at other options to fill one slot.
That could leave a competition in spring training between Gee and Mejia, but Mejia would do well to build his in-game resume for the rest of this season as Gee clearly has thrown much better in his first two outings.
