The Mets have agreed to a one-year deal for veteran shortstop Ronny Cedeño, two people with knowledge of the situation confirmed, with the idea that he will back up Ruben Tejada, Jose Reyes' young replacement at shortstop, and the club's starting second baseman.
Cedeño still must pass a physical examination to complete the deal. He will make a base of roughly $1 million with easily attainable incentives to increase the deal.
Cedeño, who turns 29 in February, had played for the Pirates since 2009. He started 118 games at shortstop (and one at second base) for the Pirates, with a .297 on-base percentage and a .337 slugging percentage in 454 plate appearances. More important for the Mets, he played good defense, as has been the case for most of his career.
