Mets' Brandon Nimmo dealing with wrist pain, believes he'll avoid injured list
Brandon Nimmo has a sprained right wrist but said it is “not at all” something that would require him to go on the injured list.
Despite receiving a cortisone shot and being absent from the Mets’ lineup Saturday against the Phillies, he expected to return potentially as soon as Sunday. Manager Buck Showalter called Nimmo day-to-day.
“It’s nothing to be too worried about,” Nimmo said. “It’s just irritated right now. They want me to not be having pain on my swings, so hopefully the next couple of days will help with that.”
He has felt the discomfort in his wrist since April 30, when he slid head-first into the plate against the Phillies (the play in which Francisco Lindor sent a grounder to first base, Rhys Hoskins threw home, Nimmo beat the tag attempt and he celebrated by slamming his helmet). When it got worse in recent days, the Mets decided to have him get an MRI, which revealed the apparently minor sprain.
“I’ve been playing on it for a while,” he said. “This is more to get me back to 100 percent.”
The Mets’ defensive versatility meant that Nimmo, the centerfielder, was replaced by Luis Guillorme, who played second base and batted leadoff. Jeff McNeil moved to left, with Mark Canha playing center.
As the rotation turns
Chris Bassitt is all set to face the Phillies on Sunday, he said. Showalter had characterized it as a bit uncertain because he had a cold.
After David Peterson pitches against the Nationals on Monday, Trevor Williams will get the next shot at being the Mets’ No. 5 starter on Tuesday.
Man of the hour
Recently retired WFAN original Ed Coleman, who posted Mets pre and postgame shows for more than 20 years, threw out the ceremonial first pitch Saturday. Showalter presented him with a No. 5 Mets jersey — a nod to David Wright, who recorded a video sending his well wishes — and John Franco caught the pitch.
Personnel news
The Mets called up Nick Plummer from Triple-A Syracuse to be their new backup outfielder as Travis Jankowski is out 6-8 weeks with a broken right hand. They sent down righthander Yoan Lopez, who returned to Syracuse after getting his one-game suspension out of the way Friday . . . Third-base coach Joey Cora returned to the team after about a week away due to a family matter.
