The Mets made the unexpected move of signing Tim Byrdak to a one-year extension.
Rarely do the Mets complete deals in-season — Reyes and David Wright are the only two other notable exceptions in the past decade. But general manager Sandy Alderson said it was a chance to give the Mets two solid lefthanders for the bullpen — along with Daniel Herrera — heading into next year. Byrdak, who earned roughly $1.2 million this season, had limited lefthanders to a .204 average in 93 at-bats before yesterday.
