With Scott Hairston flailing in leftfield -- and, more importantly, at the plate -- the Mets could eventually consider Nick Evans for a righthanded bench role, a move that also would give them some flexibility at other positions. Hairston was supposed to provide some pop in reserve, but he was batting .179 (5-for-28) with one homer and 12 strikeouts through Wednesday.
Compared with those numbers, Evans might make sense in a very specified role, and he homered twice Thursday for Triple-A Buffalo in the first game of a doubleheader against Rochester. Evans was batting .204 (10-for-49) overall, but .417 (5-for-12) against lefthanders. A small sample size for sure, but Terry Collins is a fan of Evans, and the Mets already have shown a penchant for quick transactions this season.
