Sandy Alderson said the Mets are still "in a loose sense" talking with free-agent centerfielder George Springer about coming to Citi Field.

Speaking on Jon Heyman’s "Big Time Baseball Podcast" on Tuesday, Alderson made it seem as if the Mets are not desperate to add Springer, but are more in a polite listening mode.

"Given the level of excitement, enthusiasm surrounding the Mets, I don’t think we’ve been crossed off his list," Alderson said. "I would say that we’re still engaged, in a loose sense, with Springer."

Springer, 31, would seem to fit the Mets’ biggest remaining need since the club acquired shortstop Francisco Lindor and starter Carlos Carrasco from Cleveland last week and signed catcher James McCann and reliever Trevor May earlier this offseason.

Springer, a New Britain, Connecticut, native, is a three-time All-Star who spent his first seven seasons in Houston. In 2020, he hit .265 with 14 homers and an .899 OPS in 51 games.

The Blue Jays are the only other known suitor for Springer. The Mets could shift Brandon Nimmo to left if they sign the righthanded-hitting Springer.
