Mickey Callaway believes Freeport's Justin Dunn could be pitching for the Mets next year
WASHINGTON — Mets manager Mickey Callaway said on Thursday that he wouldn’t be surprised to see Freeport’s Justin Dunn make his major-league debut next season.
Callaway was answering questions about the Mets’ starting pitching depth for 2019 when he was asked about Dunn, who went 8-8 with a 3.59 ERA and 156 strikeouts in 135 1/3 combined innings for Class A St. Luice and Double-A Binghamton.
Dunn, who turns 23 on Saturday, recently spent time at Citi Field as part of a Mets development camp for top minor leaguers. The righthander got to pitch to David Wright in a simulated game. The next time Dunn takes the mound in Flushing will be for real.
“He’s on our radar, for sure,” Callaway said. “We brought him to that winter development program knowing that he might be close. You want to expose him to some of the things that he might see at the major-league level. I think if he continues to improve the way he’s done this year that you’re going to see him at some point in a Mets uniform next year.”
