MIAMI - Francisco Rodriguez is expected back in Queens Criminal Court this morning for another arraignment, this time on a criminal contempt charge for allegedly violating his restraining order by sending 56 text messages to his fiancee. It is a Class A misdemeanor that carries a maximum one-year jail term.
The Mets' closer already is facing third-degree assault and second-degree harassment charges, which also carry a year in jail if convicted. Police say Rodriguez attacked Carlos Peña, the 53-year-old father of his fiancee, Daian Peña, in Citi Field's family room after a game on Aug. 11.
Rodriguez is rehabbing a torn ligament in his right thumb, an injury the Mets contend occurred in the fight. His next scheduled court appearance is Oct. 7.
Parnell shut down
The Mets announced Tuesday that Bobby Parnell is likely done for the season after an MRI revealed Monday that he has an inflamed plica - a ribbonlike tissue - in his right elbow. The injury will not require surgery and Parnell should make a full recovery with the additional rest.
Parnell said that he had been feeling "stiffness" in the elbow for the past week and he was relieved to discover the condition is a relatively minor one.
"I could tell I wasn't 100 percent," said Parnell, who has a 2.83 ERA in 41 appearances. "They said it was nothing serious and rest is the only thing that would help it."
While the Mets don't anticipate Parnell pitching again this season, he wouldn't rule it out. "It's something that I could have had a cortisone shot and pitched tomorrow," Parnell said. "I hoping to get back, but I don't know if that's possible."
Extra bases
Luis Hernandez had surgery to repair a fractured metatarsal bone in his right foot. Hernandez suffered the break fouling a ball off his foot Saturday, then homered on the next pitch.
