The Mets are bringing back the bullpen . . . of the 2025 Yankees.
The Mets on Wednesday agreed to a two-year, $22 million contract with former Yankees reliever Luke Weaver, a source confirmed. The deal is pending a physical.
Weaver will be reunited with former Yankees teammate Devin Williams, who the Mets signed to a three-year, $51 million contract earlier this month.
Williams and Weaver are part of the Mets’ pivot from closer Edwin Diaz, who left for a new deal with the Dodgers last week.
Weaver, 32, was a bargain-basement find for the Yankees late in the 2023 season. In 2024, the righthander emerged as the club’s closer en route to the World Series. In 12 postseason appearances, Weaver picked up a win and four saves.
But Weaver faltered in 2025 after replacing the struggling Williams as closer. He went 4-4 with a 3.62 ERA and eight saves in the regular season and imploded in the playoffs. In three appearances in the Yankees’ two rounds, Weaver went 0-1, recorded one out, and allowed five earned runs for an 81.00 ERA.
Weaver will join lefthanders A.J. Minter and Brooks Raley in the back of the Mets’ bullpen.
Weaver, who was a starter for the first eight years of his career, has expressed an open-mindedness about returning to a rotation. But with the Mets needing multiple relievers, it’s unlikely they are adding Weaver to convert him to a starter as they did last season with Clay Holmes, another former Yankees reliever.
Weaver made $2.5 million last season. While the Yankees expressed interest in a reunion, general manager Brian Cashman may have inadvertently tipped the club’s hand on Dec. 7 when he said in an interview, “We lost Devin and Weaver.”
It wasn’t true then. It is now.
Extra bases
The Mets claimed catcher Drew Romo off waivers from the Orioles and designated lefthander Brandon Waddell for assignment. Romo, a 24-year-old switch hitter, is a .167 hitter in 19 games over the past two seasons with Colorado. Waddell made 11 appearances for the Mets in 2025 and had no record and a 3.45 ERA . . . Holmes and rookie pitcher Nolan McLean were added to the roster for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, MLB announced. The tournament begins on March 5.
