CINCINNATI - Mike Pelfrey didn't accompany the Mets from Philadelphia to Cincinnati on Sunday night because he had to go to New York to have an MRI on his shoulder Monday morning.

But before Mets fans faint, know Pelfrey is not concerned. Not at all. And manager Jerry Manuel is not concerned, either.

Seriously. They are not concerned.

"It's fine," said Pelfrey, who rejoined the team Monday afternoon. "Just a little tightness, I guess you'd call it, or discomfort or whatever. I guess [the MRI was] for peace of mind, just to make sure there's nothing there, and it came back fine."

Pelfrey also said his shoulder was "a little sore" on Saturday before, during and after his start against the Phillies, and it lingered into Sunday.

But he's not worried.

"I just told them, 'Hey, it's a little tight,' " he said. "I guess maybe after last year they said, 'Hey, let's make sure.' I got it looked at and it's fine."

Ah, last year. The Mets had a few injuries last year that started out as "no big deal" and ended up as "very big deal."

But not this time. They're sure of that because the MRI came back clean.

"I'll be able to make my next start and the next 25 other starts after that," Pelfrey said. "It's not a big deal at all."

Pelfrey is 4-1 with a 2.40 ERA and one save. He had a 27-inning scoreless streak snapped on Saturday and ended up allowing six runs in four innings in a 10-0 loss to the Phillies.

Pelfrey's next start is scheduled for Friday against the Giants. He will throw a side session Tuesday, a day later than normal because the Mets are off on Thursday.
