DENVER — Joely Rodriguez was minding his own business with everything a lefthanded reliever could want in the early innings — a chair, a hoodie, a Red Bull, a massage gun, a bag of sunflower seeds — when a ballpark security guard interrupted his quality solo time.

Turns out, he was not allowed to sit in the batter’s eye, which at Coors Field is a miniature forest, complete with seven types of trees that are native to Colorado, next to the visitors’ bullpen. Rodriguez had set up camp on a pile of rocks to watch the start of the Mets’ 2-0 win against the Rockies on Sunday.

“I got to the bullpen, I took a chair and I put it right there because I wanted to see the game from centerfield,” he said through an interpreter. “I didn’t think it was going to be a big deal that I was sitting out there. I just went out there and pretty much relaxed. It was a good view.”

Alas, the bright orange sleeves of his sweatshirt caught the attention of cameras — and, apparently, a stadium employee, who wandered over after a few innings and asked him to please not be there.

“Somebody kicked me out,” Rodriguez, laughing, said in English. “They said, ‘You can’t stay over there.’ OK, OK, let me move a little bit to the side.”

Rodriguez entered in the eighth inning with two outs and two runners on base. He retired Ryan McMahon with one pitch, getting a lineout to third baseman Luis Guillorme.

Pitching plans

The Mets’ rotation against the Giants: David Peterson, in place of the injured Max Scherzer, on Monday, followed by Chris Bassitt on Tuesday and TBA on Wednesday.

If they opt to call up a spot starter, as opposed to getting by with relievers, lefthander Thomas Szapucki is a top option. In seven starts for Triple-A Syracuse, he has a 2.86 ERA and 1.32 WHIP (though he has pitched more than four innings just once). He would be on regular rest, too, having most recently played Friday. His one-inning outing then was by design and not related to injury, a team official said.

Szapucki appeared in one game for the Mets last year before having season-ending left elbow ulnar nerve transposition surgery in July.

Extra bases

Third-base coach Joey Cora left the team to tend to a family matter and probably will not be in San Francisco, Buck Showalter said . . . Starling Marte was out of the lineup Sunday after playing both ends of the Saturday doubleheader, his return from the bereavement list. “Marte needs a day,” Showalter said. “He’s had about four or five hours of sleep in about three days.” . . . Upon seeing in the clubhouse a maple donut with a piece of bacon on it, Showalter was amazed by the concoction and told anyone who would listen about it. He said he did not eat it.
