Mets' struggling Maine scheduled to see doctor Monday

John Maine, already in Jerry Manuel's doghouse, is headed back to a doctor's office Monday after the manager said the struggling pitcher "didn't feel particularly well" after Friday's rehab start for Triple-A Buffalo.
The Mets didn't specify the area of Maine's problem. But he was placed on the disabled list May 21 with weakness in his right shoulder, which has been an issue since surgery to remove a bony growth after the 2008 season.
Maine was pulled from Friday's game after throwing 88 pitches in 41/3 innings, and the Mets did not see much improvement in his second rehab start. Manuel said last week that he wanted Maine's velocity to reach 91-92 mph before considering him for a rotation spot, but his fastball hovered in the 86-88 range Friday.
"He's not very comfortable with how he's pitching right now, so we're going to have to re-evaluate that situation on a day-to-day basis," Manuel said. When asked if that means shutting him down for a while, Manuel added, "He'll be re-evaluated [today] and they'll probably come up with a plan of attack on that."
Manuel revealed the latest twist in the Maine saga a day after declaring him all but dead to the team anyway. In fielding questions about Maine on Saturday, Manuel suggested there is no spot available in the rotation and that he is incapable of pitching in relief.
Asked when he could use Maine, Manuel replied, "On the off days."

Johan Santana allowed his third grand slam of the season and has given up at least four runs in three consecutive starts for only the third time in his career. In Subway Series road games, Santana has been ripped for 17 earned runs in 162/3 innings . . . Jose Reyes went 0-for-4 to end his 11-game hitting streak.
