Mets upcoming probables, Ike Davis and Jenrry Mejia
First off, here's the upcoming probable pitchers for the Mets:
March 1 - Intrasquad
Jack Egbert
Clint Everts
Travis Blackley
Jon Niese
Tobi Stoner
R.A. Dickey
Jenrry Mejia
March 2- vs Braves at Tradition Field
Nelson Figueroa
March 3 - vs. Braves at Orlando
Fernando Nieve
Other quickie notes from today:
-- Manuel compared Jenrry Mejia to Mariano Rivera as both have naturally breaking cut fastballs and did not rule out using Mejia in the bullpen if the manager got "crazy" and "desperate." Mejia threw an impressive live batting practice session, but showed that his seconday pitches, a 12-6 curve ball and power changeup, still need work. Hitters were amazed by his cut fastball, however, with a number of them turning back to catcher Omir Santos and asking, "What was that?"
-- Manuel also would not completely eliminate Ike Davis from the competition at first base, but he definitely seems to be a longshot. Davis, the only lefthander, looks more natural at the position than the others and he's an imposing figure at the plate as well. He ripped a Jon Niese curve ball about 395 feet to deep center, where it short-hopped the fence.
-- Manuel still wants Niese to win the fifth starter's job out of spring training to give him the flexibility of using Fernando Nieve in a bullpen role.
