Mets win arbitration case

A minor financial victory for the Mets has come down with reports than an arbitrator has ruled in their favor regarding a 2007 issue with free agent catcher Yorvit Torrealba.

The Mets had agreed to a three-year, $14.4 million contract with Torrealba, but the club backed out after a physical caused alarm over a potential problem with his right shoulder.

Torrealba and the Major League Baseball Players Association filed a grievance.

The arbitrator ruled for the Mets, saying the club had a legitimate medical concern.

Most deals now require a physical before an agreement is considered official.
