Joe Torre and commissioner Rob Manfred said Thursday night that Major League Baseball was still in the early stages of investigating the domestic violence charges against Jose Reyes. Manfred said it was too early to put a timetable on the decision.
"I did testify in regards to our putting a policy together , but our legal representatives are the ones who have to work with the Players' Association,'' Torre said at a Manhattan charity event for Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation, which provides counseling for children of domestic violence.
"I'm proud of both organizations for having a policy instead of pulling something out of the air.''
Reyes, who is accused of assaulting his wife in a Hawaii hotel on Halloween, will be the first test of baseball's new domestic violence policy, which allows Manfred to mete out a punishment at his discretion and even without a conviction. Manfred said yesterday that they have not interviewed the Rockies' shortstop, and that it was still too early in the process to say how the investigation will shape up.
Cone: No worries about Tanaka. David Cone said Masahiro Tanaka's offseason surgery could have been a lot worse, though he admitted he was surprised Tanaka was undergoing a procedure. The Yankees righthander had surgery Oct. 20 to remove a bone spur, much to the surprise of the team, which wasn't aware he'd need surgery when he pitched in the wild-card playoff loss to the Astros.
"I'm surprised we didn't hear a word about it,'' said Cone, who was honored at Torre's charity event. "Bone chips are pretty easy to deal with. I've got a lot of friends of mine that are ex-pitchers that make necklaces out of them . . . On the scale of pitcher injuries to their arms, a bone chip is probably one of the more favorable ones.''
Notes & quotes: New Marlins manager Don Mattingly said he was not looking forward to facing Mets pitching now that he's moved into the NL East. "It's not a good thought, honestly,'' said Mattingly, who led the Dodgers team that lost to the Mets in five games in the NLDS. "With those monsters they have on the mound, they're going to be a hard test.'' . . . Derek Jeter declined to answer questions about his recent engagement to model Hannah Davis, but did say Thursday that he plans to build up his website, The Players' Tribune, in the near future.
