Pagan getting close to return

As David Wright heads to the disabled list and Ike Davis' rehab gets under way, the Mets did see some promise for the return of Angel Pagan from a strained oblique.

Pagan played Wednesday night for Class A St. Lucie in Tampa, his first game action since going on the DL April 22. He went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in seven innings.

Pagan, who played a simulated game on Tuesday in Florida, suffered a setback during his rehab and has just recently started to work out without pain.

"He ran great, no discomfort at all, so hopefully the recovery's fast," manager Terry Collins said.

The Mets want Pagan to play four straight days for St. Lucie before recalling him.

As for Davis, Collins said the first baseman is still just beginning to recover from a high ankle sprain and bone bruise.

"He's in the pool, he can't run on his ankle yet," Collins said. "He's doing some stuff in the exercise room to keep his core strong."

Davis was injured May 10 and went on the disabled list the next day, so it seems unlikely he'll be ready to return when the DL stint ends on Wednesday.

"If he's going to go seven days before he runs on it, it's got a chance to be a little longer," Collins said.

In other injury news, reliever Bobby Parnell (circulatory problem) pitched a scoreless inning for Triple-A Buffalo Wednesday, allowing two hits and striking out one. He's 0-0 with a 4.76 ERA in six minor-league appearances.

Ollie rained out

Former Met Oliver Perez had his season debut rained out in Harrisburg, Pa. Perez, who was in extended spring training with the Nationals, will wait to make his Double-A appearance.

The Nationals also reported that Stephen Strasburg, recovering from Tommy John surgery, will throw off a mound for the first time in the next few days.
