Pelfrey takes the mound vs. Nationals
Let’s call this an important start for Mike Pelfrey (4-1, 2.65). He probably is not the pitcher who started the season at 4-0 with a 0.69 earned run average. Nor, Mets fans hope, is he the one who was bombed by the Phillies in a 10-0 loss. He rebounded nicely against Giants, allowing three runs in the no-decision. However, the Giants have a suspect offense.
Pelfrey reported some shoulder stiffness over the last two weeks, but has said that is no longer an issue. This will be a tough day to pitch—cold and rainy—but we hear fans have closed the excuse department.?
Pelfrey’s successful beginning to the season has made him a pivotal performer at the top half of the rotation. He and Johan Santana (also blasted by Philadelphia and passable against the Giants) have to be reliable because there is the threat of inconsistency with John Maine and Jonathon Niese. And Oliver Perez may be a start away from banishment.
