1. The Home Run in Milwaukee
On Oct. 3, 2024, the Mets were trailing by two with one out in the ninth inning of the decisive Game 3 of the NL Wild Card series against the Brewers. Alonso crushed a three-run home run off closer Devin Williams and held on for the 3-2 victory. The win sent the Mets to the NLDS — where they beat the Phillies, 3-1 — and introduced Alonso’s iconic “playoff pumpkin” — a superstitious gourd Alonso carried with him for the remainder of the season.
2. Breaking Darryl Strawberry’s team home run record
Alonso hit his 253rd home run in the third inning of a 13-5 win over Atlanta on Aug. 12. The two-run homer broke the franchise home run record, which Mets’ legend Darryl Strawberry held since 1988. Alonso hit his second homer of the night in the sixth inning to extend his lead.
3. Setting the rookie HR record
Alonso hit 53 home runs as a rookie in 2019 and broke the previous rookie record held by Aaron Judge (52 in 2017). Alonso was the NL Rookie of the Year, receiving 29 of the 30 first-place votes.
4. Subway Series walk-off
In 2020, Alonso’s two-run, walk-off homer earned the Mets a 9-7 comeback win over the Yankees in the final Subway Series game of the season. The win split the series, 3-3, and marked the first walk-off of Alonso’s MLB career.
5. Two-time HR derby winner
Alonso won his first home run derby in 2019, hitting 57 total homers to beat out Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the finals. In 2021, he repeated his title with 74 total homers to beat Trey Mancini in Denver.
